Questions to ask an agent about ANU Diploma progression

ANU Pathway Diploma progression depends on the aligned Bachelor and required GPA, while credit for a different degree is assessed case by case.

Ask an education agent to identify your intended Bachelor, explain its progression GPA and separate their application services from ANU’s academic support. ANU Pathway Diplomas can lead into aligned Bachelor degrees with one year of credit, but the required GPA differs by destination. Moving to a non-aligned degree involves a separate assessment, with credit decided case by case.

The most useful agent discussion should leave you with a clear pathway and a written account of who handles each stage.

Which Bachelor does this Diploma lead to?

Start with the degree you want to finish. Ask the agent to name both the Diploma and the aligned Bachelor, then explain the progression requirement for that particular pairing.

ANU Pathway Diploma Aligned Bachelor destination Required Diploma GPA
Diploma of Business and Economics Bachelor of Accounting; Bachelor of Business Administration; Bachelor of Commerce; Bachelor of Economics; Bachelor of Finance 4.0
Diploma of Computing Bachelor of Computing 4.0
Diploma of Politics and International Relations Bachelor of Asian Studies 4.0
Diploma of Politics and International Relations Bachelor of International Relations; Bachelor of International Security Studies; Bachelor of Political Science; Bachelor of Public Policy 4.6

A general statement such as “the Diploma leads to a Bachelor” leaves out a condition that could affect your plans. Within Politics and International Relations, for example, the GPA needed for Asian Studies differs from the requirement for the other listed destinations.

Useful questions include:

  • Which aligned Bachelor would my application package include?
  • What GPA must I achieve for that destination?
  • What happens to my study plan if I do not reach that GPA?
  • Who will explain the progression requirements before I accept an offer?

An agent can help explain the pathway. Their assurance does not replace the academic conditions attached to it.

Am I eligible for the Diploma route?

ANU’s Diploma entry framework includes a minimum selection rank of 70. Applicants with a selection rank of 80 or above should apply for a Bachelor and cannot commence a Pathway Diploma.

Ask the agent which qualification and entry route they are using to assess your application. If they discuss a selection rank, ask them to explain how it relates to your actual qualification rather than treating a raw school mark as the same thing.

The Diploma has no subject prerequisites, and adjustment factors do not apply. Direct English entry requires IELTS overall 6.5, with no band below 6.0, or equivalent.

The application must also reflect the intended study sequence: the Diploma cannot be pursued with a standalone one-year study intention and must be packaged with a Bachelor. Ask the agent to explain how your proposed Diploma and Bachelor fit together before preparing the application.

What does the year of credit cover?

ANU Pathway Diplomas are standalone AQF Level 5 qualifications nested within a pathway to an aligned Bachelor. They run for 12 months full-time across two semesters and comprise eight courses, including ESEN1001 Academic Skills for University Study and level-1000 courses shared with Bachelor students.

The aligned pathway provides one year, or 48 units, of credit towards the Bachelor.

Ask the agent to distinguish between:

  • Credit within the aligned pathway.
  • Credit if you later choose a non-aligned Bachelor.
  • Any change to the remaining study plan following a change of degree.

After the Diploma, students may apply for a non-aligned Bachelor. They are assessed like other applicants with one year of undergraduate study at ANU, and credit is considered case by case. The full year of credit is not guaranteed when changing programs.

Who supports me after enrolment?

The Diplomas are delivered by a wholly ANU-owned Pathways entity at ANU’s Acton Campus in Canberra. Students are full ANU students from commencement and share classes with Bachelor students. Delivery is in person only, with no remote option.

ANU’s support model includes pre-commencement enrolment counselling, one-on-one academic advice throughout the Diploma, monitoring of engagement and progress, referrals to campus services, and support for the transition into the Bachelor.

Ask the agent to describe their own role alongside those services:

  • Does your service finish when the application is submitted, when I accept an offer, or after enrolment?
  • Will you help explain offer conditions and enrolment documents?
  • If I have an academic progress concern, what assistance will you provide?
  • Will you help organise the documents needed for the Diploma-to-Bachelor transition?
  • Who will handle my enquiry if my original adviser is unavailable?

These questions help you compare service scope without assuming that an agent provides ANU’s academic counselling or controls progression decisions.

What costs are included in the quotation?

The 2027 indicative annual tuition fee is AUD 57,640 for each ANU Pathway Diploma. This covers indicative annual Diploma tuition only. It is not the total cost of the Diploma-and-Bachelor sequence.

Ask for a quotation that clearly distinguishes university tuition from any agent service charges and other expenses. If the agent charges a fee, request written terms covering:

  • The work included.
  • Payment timing.
  • Any additional charges.
  • Cancellation and refund conditions.

No agent fee or refund entitlement is specified here, so those terms need to be explicit in the agent’s own agreement. Financial planning should cover the Diploma-and-Bachelor sequence.

Scholarships also need careful wording. Most students are not eligible for the ANU International Achievement Award or Vice-Chancellor’s Award during the Diploma. Assessment occurs on articulation where the Diploma GPA is at least 4.6; that threshold does not itself promise an award. Pacific Region citizens have a stated exception: a 50% tuition discount under the International Achievement Award from Diploma commencement.

What will the agent put in writing?

Before committing, ask for a written summary of the proposed pathway. It should name the Diploma, the aligned Bachelor, the required GPA and the credit available through that alignment.

The summary should also identify the agent’s responsibilities, any service charges and the terms governing those charges. If a possible degree change has been discussed, it should preserve the distinction between aligned progression and a separate application with case-by-case credit.

A useful adviser makes these boundaries understandable. You should be able to explain what you are applying for, what you must achieve and what help you are paying for—without relying on a broad promise of progression.
